The disappearing Labyrinth

Kashgar, Xinjiang-Uygur Autonomous Region, China, the significant city of the Silk Road of ancient time, now held a huge bazar and is a place to communicate for Uighur people who come together from various places.

The old town of Kashgar is the place where their traditional mud-brick homes cluster together. In 2010, this labyrinth of ancient homes and narrow, winding streets is been keeping destroyed by the Chinese government plan to modernize a way of life that officials consider dangerous and backward.

 

新疆ウイグル自治区西端、カシュガル。古代からシルクロードの要衝地であったカシュガルは、現在も大規模なバザールが開催され、各地から集まったウイグル人の交流の場となっている。旧市街約8キロ四方の旧市街は「老城」と呼ばれ、伝統的なウイグル家屋が建ち並ぶ地域だ。中国政府はそのカシュガル旧市街の再開発として、6万5千世帯、約22万人のウイグル人の一方的な立ち退きと旧市街の取り壊しを続けている。
